ABSTRACT

The Taiwan question is the result of the Chinese civil war between the Communists (CCP) and the Nationalists (KMT) for the sole authority over China. The two sides cooperated twice (1924–1927, 1937–1946) to face their common enemies before the Nationalists fled to Taiwan following their defeat on the Mainland. The Communists vowed to “militarily liberate” Taiwan, while the Nationalists held onto their dream of recovering their lost authority over the Mainland. The Taiwan question is the result of this rendition of indivisible sovereignty over the entirety of China by the Communists and the Nationalists.
