ABSTRACT

Delta steel company (DSC) was incorporated on 14 November 1979, under the Companies Act of 1968 and commissioned on 29 January 1982. The selection of Ovwian-Aladja as the site for the steel plant took into consideration the abundance of natural gas in the oil-rich delta area. The main products of Delta steel company were billets, plain rounds, ribbed bars, equal and unequal angles, tees, channels, flat bars and I-beams. Delta Steel provides an interesting case study of the factors that can influence the attraction, motivation and retention of employees. The company's mission was to become the driver and bastion of industrialization in Nigeria, and this message was embodied and communicated in its advertisements, products, souvenirs, and so on with the popular mantra Reinforcing Nigeria with Steel'. The steel township was like one huge African clan, except that the people were of different descent, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds.
