ABSTRACT

The idea of creative cities is a little strange. People can be individually creative – they can paint pictures or write novels. In the context of urban sustainability, however, the term creative must be understood in the sense of a non-traditional, yet effective, response to the challenges of rapid urbanization. Those challenges are all too evident in the mega-cities of the developing countries. They range from lack of employment and educational opportunities, lack of fresh water and sewage treatment to overcrowding and congestion. Even crime and drug culture can be blamed on the stresses of urbanization.
