ABSTRACT

The five nonprofit organizations (NPOs) featured in this book shared stories of poverty-relief efforts, which highlighted a perspective of the economically marginalized and disenfranchised whose experiences ranged from abject homelessness to gnawing hunger. The recasting or reframing activities that NPOs employed make a discussion of collection action framing necessary. Collective action frames are theoretical constructions originating in social movement literature. This chapter serves as an initial framework or model of social change based on the NPOs in the case study. Case study analysis is characterized by an element of subjectivity, thereby creating opportunities for continued development and refinement. Alliance provides advocacy trainings to service providers to empower them to advocate around homelessness. They also use social media to address homelessness in Chicago. The author further argued that research and policy advocacy has tended to be separately conceived, the partitioning of which served only to hinder micro level social change.
