ABSTRACT

One of the frequent comments made about strategic planning is that ‘x per cent of strategic plans fail through poor implementation’, where the magnitude of the x per cent quoted (usually between 66 per cent and 90 per cent) varies depending on the research report, survey of chief executives or business magazine article recently read. Irrespective of the statistical accuracy or research methods used, the message is very clear: for many organisations implementation is the Achilles’ heel of their strategic plans. In this chapter we will consider some of the reasons for this and what organisations might do to help implement their strategic plan effectively.
