ABSTRACT

Although the process of the Strategic Defence Review (SDR) was in the hands of the Ministry of Defence (MoD), Parliament continued to follow closely its progress, made inputs, and criticised, according to the individual's politics and party affiliation. The House of Commons conducted a defence debate on 27 October 1997 and the House of Lords followed with theirs on 6 November 1997. The Select Committee on Defence collected evidence during 1997 and 1998, before issuing their Eighth Report on 10 September 1998 on the SDR. The Government responded with their comments on the Select Committee's Report with their own Sixth Special Report on 18 November 1998. The Government recorded that it could not agree with all the propositions advanced but were pleased to note that the Select Committee endorsed the Review as a plan for the future and provided a sufficiently durable strategy to last until 2015.
