Inasmuchaswemostcertainlybelievethatyourmajesty willbepleasedbyanyhappyeventwhichmayoccurtoyour majesty'sservitorsandvassals,wehavedeterminedtowrite yourmajestyofwhatbefellusinthiscitythispresentyear of[15]67withrespecttotwoimposingarmadas,oneEnglish andtheotherFrench,whichonseparateoccasionscamehere. Althoughtothoseaccustomedtoseegreatthingsandto accomplishlargeandheroicdeeds,asisyourmajesty,prima faciethisincidentmayseemoflittleornoimportance,neverthelessifconsiderationbegiventothelimitedrenownthis cityenjoysandtothescantinessofitspopulation,which ordinarilyisnotoversixtymen,andtoitspoorequipment inarmsandmunitionsofwarwithwhichtodefendandto offend,and,atthesametime,tothenumberoftheenemy, thoroughlyarmedandexercisedinwar,andtothegreat quantityofartillerywhichtheEnglishandFrenchbrought hither,yourmajestywillnotfailtoassigntotheoccurrence itsproportionateimportanceamonggreaterevents.
