ABSTRACT

Current uses of space occur mostly in Earth orbit. The exploration of space takes us further out through the probes to the planets and beyond. The legal regime of the Moon, asteroids and other celestial bodies is not finally settled and will require adaption, but milestones have been passed and markers set. Commercial exploitation of the Moon and of asteroids is under active discussion. The Moon is one of the naturally occurring celestial bodies, a category not fully defined in law. Their legal status has recently become an active issue because of plans for their commercial exploitation. The Moon is the only natural satellite of the Earth. The Earth not only controls the lunar orbit but also significantly affects the physical features of the Moon. The Moon controls the Earth’s tides and influences some biological functions. It is important in some religions, in literature and in art.
