ABSTRACT

This chapter sets out a number of areas and issues which consider be revisiting and addressing in policy strategy and practice contexts. When community representatives from immigrant organizations, religious and interest groups take part in policy processes, the legitimacy base is strengthened. Once political and public policymakers engage seriously with immigrant representatives in their common interests for developing a shared community, a vital level of the integration process is ushered in, with the promise of numerous downstream positive effects. Socioeconomic exclusion has repercussions in all areas of social life, and the way we shape responses will have high significance for social integration in economically developed receiving societies. Social work with immigrants would often call for family-oriented methods. Racism can be personally internalized by individuals who experience it. It can undermine individuals' self-perception and self-esteem, especially if it not counteracted by supportive and protective mechanisms.
