ABSTRACT

Learning systems incorporate organising principles, technologies, relationships and networks, and the physical learning environment. Heerwagen's other insight concerns congeniality, which speaks to their need for emotional security and sociability. Work and performance are then redefined within the conceptual framework of distributed cognition, elements of which are spatial, social and technological. This led me to a much deeper understanding of how the workplace enabling technologies and adaptive learning are inter-linked. The elements combine to create culturally appropriate environments for enacting connected, dynamic processes in the service of customer-focused performance. This deeper understanding emerged from the process of writing and reflecting. A core contention of the book is that social technologies have enormous potential to expand human creativity and productivity significantly in a wave of smart working. Writing the blog was useful in other ways, the main one being the feedback from community of readers. A final benefit is gaining a reputation as someone who is interested in new ways of working.
