ABSTRACT

The Commissioners were Sir William Wynter (Surveyor of Ships), Richard Martin (London alderman and Master of the Mint), John Harte (London alderman and director of the Muscovy Company), Thomas Smythe (Farmer of the Customs and Master of Mining Works), and John Hawkins (Treasurer of the Navy and certainly one of the adventurers). (Corbett, Sp. War, p. 95.) Assisting them, in addition to Drake himself, were Carleill and Frobisher. A separate note regarding the accounts (dated in December I 586), in which the latter two joined with the five Commissioners, is in S.P. 12{195: 79 (pr. in Corbett, Sp. W11r, pp. 92-4).
