ABSTRACT

What constitutes a simulation and a simulator? In this context, a simulation is a combination of scenarios, human participants, and models. A simulator provides the underpinning of the simulation, most often in the form of hardware and software. There are also a number of different types of simulator, usually divided in order of their fidelity, complexity and context coverage. We have full- mission, multi-task, limited-task and special task-bridge (or other control room) simulators, and table top, software and games (e.g., Bergström et al., 2009). All have their uses and the choice should be carefully considered in view of your goal and intended result, rather than utilising technology for its own sake.
