ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how simulators have been designed and used to teach driving skills in rail, and how well simulation has lent itself to learning train driving. It draws together the latest applications for simulators in training and provides a helpful resource for researchers and practitioners alike. While many of the themes overlap with other transport modes covered in this book, there are numerous dimensions that are unique to rail. For this reason the chapter includes sections associated with train driving skills and practice around simulation design. Like most other transport modes, rail has seen incredible advances in technology and this chapter discusses simulation and train driving in the context of both traditional railway operations and modern high-speed rail.
