ABSTRACT

This chapter takes a look at the history of pilot training in simulators of all types, followed by a review of current industry standards and guidelines. Finally, it discusses the effectiveness of simulator training and concludes with an overview of the methods for assessing the transfer of training from simulators to flight.

From the outset it has to be emphasised that flight simulation does not provide training. Put an untrained person in a simulator and no matter how long they spend in there, they will not emerge as a competent pilot. Flight simulation supports the training process but simulation facilities can only be specified after the training objectives have been set, not vice versa.
