ABSTRACT

Contributing to the literature addressing Social Movements (SMs), this chapter 1 addresses the complexities of the processes involved in Londoners’ attempts to ensure they receive the maximum benefit from hosting the 2012 Olympic Games. It investigates the SM impact on pre-event politicking via case studies of two of the most prominent resistance organizations. Resistance to the Games has taken a number of forms and, perhaps because of this, has remained fragmented and limited in its ability to articulate precise aims. Such ‘movements’ are briefly reviewed in the opening sections of the chapter.
