ABSTRACT

Scenarios are images of the future constructed by combining possible developments in different ways. In this way, imaginary situations are created which one can explore. This has helped many organizations to pre-imagine situations in which the organization could end up in the future. In the seventeenth century the Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter was also aware of the benefits of scenarios: before he set out to sail to England. Scenarios have a certain horizon: in space, in time and in the issues covered. Which space they cover and how they are filled in depends on the organization which makes the scenarios. The design, construction and structure of scenarios are of critical importance for their usefulness in decision-making. Both the quality of the content of the scenario and the quality of their graphic design is important. The scenarios can be presented as a story, but also as a newspaper, a poster, a news bulletin or a movie.
