ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of how to evaluate non-technical skills using ratings of observed work behaviour. It discusses some general guidance devised by psychologists and practitioners who have designed behaviour rating systems in nuclear power and acute medicine, as well as in aviation. The chapter focuses on the assessment of an individual’s non-technical skills by observing his or her behaviour at work or in a simulator, and usually in a team setting. The two components of a behavioural rating system are the list of specified behaviours or categories of behaviour to be rated and the rating scale. Underlying the design of behaviour rating systems are a set of psychometric properties. The chapter discusses key aspects of using a behaviour rating system for evaluation and outlines a number of points concerning the training and qualification of raters. It also considers the practicalities of undertaking assessments on the job or in a simulator.
