In seeking to avoid concessions to his Polish supporters, the False Dmitri 'found a substitute in a proposal for a united crusade against Turkey' (Pares, p. 135). In this connection, it is interesting to note that he received the ambassadors Tatishchev and Ivanov on the very day of their return - an unusual procedure at the Muscovite court.
