Saltan-Mahmut's hostage son - who was, it was said, a substituted Tartar boy. But Buturlin and his own son, together with Pleshcheyev and his two sons, and many other boyars were slain; Saltan-Mahmut was also among the killed in this savage affair which resulted in the annihilation of some seven thousand Russian troops. Prince V. I. Bakhteyarov-Rostovski (q.v. RSB, under name), A. Blagoy and S. Mamatov were taken prisoners; the latter as a convert to Orthodoxy from Islam, was drenched with naphtha and burnt alive by his captors. For the Osen river and topography of Tarku see Commentary 5 I.
