ABSTRACT

Giildenstadt CV 01. I, p. 241), visited Alaverdi in the suite of Irakli 11, on 18 March 1772. For brief description, with details of icons, cf. Bakradze, Alcty, Vol. v, pp. 994-5. According to Wakhusht, the monastery takes its name from Alon-gwerdi, 'the flank of Mount Alon' (for Aloni, see above, p. 199). The Alaverdeli, or Bishop of Alaverdi, was the premier bishop of Kakheti, and his see covered all mountain Kakheti; cf. Wak./ Brosset, p. 321, Wak./lan., p. 127, n. I, and Bakradze, Alcty, V 01. v, pp. 994-;.
