ABSTRACT

COMMENTARY 47 'The Turkish Pasha of Gen{ha, Kaikhosr' (ref. Chap. 8, p.384,n. I) 'The Turkish Pasha of Genzha, Kaikhosr'; this name is of Persian origin; it was uncommon among the Turks later than the Seljuk period but is frequently found as a Georgian personal name. The monk Kiril makes it clear that this Kay Khusrau was a Georgian of high standing in the Turkish service. It is possible that he may be identifiable as Kay Khusrau Jaqeli, second son of Kwarkware V, Atabeg of Samtskhe (Sa-atabag-o), died November 1582. This Kay Khusrau was a grandson of Atabeg Kay Khusrau II (died 1575) and of the celebrated DedisImedi, daughter of Bagrat, first Prince of Mukhrani - of the cadet line of the Bagratids of Kartli (see Brosset, HG, Vol. II/i, p. 640, Genealogical Tree of the Atabegs). Kay Khusrau must have been born after 1564 when his father married Marekh, daughter of the Dadian Levan 1. In 1588, he is mentioned as having been sent, with his grandmother, on an embassy to the Turkish Pasha of Akhaltsikhe - on behalf of his uncle, Atabeg Manuchar II, ally and son-in-law of Simon I of Kartli (cf. Brosset, HG, Vol. II/i, p. 227 and Chronique Georgienne, p. 27). Following the political eclipse of Simon and Manuchar, it is possible that Kay Khusrau -like other members of his family - took service with the Turks. In 1602 he may have been about thirty-six years of age - old enough to have had a marriageable daughter of fifteen or sixteen.
