ABSTRACT

In the introductory chapter we have provided a broad outline of the definition and demography of regional, rural and remote Australian communities and some defining factors of social work in this context. In this chapter we aim to provide a ‘thicker description’ or more in-depth context of the setting of this book. As the focus is on social work in regional, rural and remote Australia, it is important we have a shared understanding of what this means in the Australian context.
