ABSTRACT
All types of tourism may develop in a metropolitan area. Due to the service-providing character of the suburban zone, holiday tourism plays a particular role. Inhabitants of the suburban zone who work in a big urban centre have more diversified motives for holiday tourism, because they can be found both in the city and in the suburban zone. Diversified motives for holiday tourism make the basis for distinguishing types of tourism. There are diverse motives for visiting cities, including metropolises, in free time. Due to the abundance of natural and cultural values in Piaseczno County it is predisposed for the development of recreation and tourism in the Warsaw Metropolitan Area and Region. Tourism services provide an opportunity for socioeconomic development in the southern part of the region. The development of the tourism and recreational function should correspond to the local conditions and guarantee protection of natural and cultural resources.
