ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book reveals what women's stories can tell us about societal attitudes towards risk, pleasure, femininity, sexuality, and whether these attitudes have changed, it is not just about storytelling. It reflects the search for a revised agenda for rendering women and girls visible in contemporary forms of cultures such as club spaces. The book addresses how and why they identify with each other and with clubbing as a lifestyle and a leisure activity. It explores how their identities are constructed through style, music, sexuality and drug use in the different arenas used for clubbing. The book addresses the issues surrounding young women and recreational drug use, and how this is interrelated with the expression and regulation of sexuality within club scenes in Manchester. It highlights the importance of female producers of club scenes such as DJs, promoters and drug dealers.
