ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines and explains the complexity of what is termed occupational displacement a form of displacement which may in fact involve a range of determining factors that have slowly evolved but which have now intensified and become more complex due to both globalization and the various intended and unintended consequences of rapid social change as a result of globalization. It presents the case of Indian artisans and highlights the intricacies and intertwined determinants which have led to the fragility of social life of numerous artisanal communities throughout the global south in analysing occupational displacement. One could argue that globalisation and competitive trade, together with the internet and e-commerce, has increased substantially the markets for Indian crafts. The switch to environmentally friendly and safe techniques was both fortunate and timely, with a growing ethical consumer demand and interest in alternative and green consumption and fair trade.
