ABSTRACT

With around 1.1 million civil and military staff members and a budget of more than 200 billion US dollars, the US Army is the biggest, most complex and arguably the most expensive organisation in the world. It can hardly be suspected of being excessively open to trying out new ideas or being prone to philanthropic gestures. But it could really benefit from some more resilience and is therefore assiduously conducting research in this field. Since the terror attacks of 9/11, the USA and its allies have been continuously engaged in war missions in Afghanistan and in Iraq, notably with over 500,000 men and women as active soldiers of the US Army in the field. In the course of the last 13 years, around 2.3 million war veterans have been created in this way, 25% of whom have chronic psychological disorders that are attributable to the traumatic experiences of war operations. Based on a major study on the resilience and risk situation of the armed forces (STARRS), these figures were published by the US Army in 2014.
