ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a hybrid case study in twofold. First it describes two related pieces of work that happened at different times to inform it. The first of these is a critical evaluation of eight risk and resilience Standards. These eight were chosen because they all apply in differing ways to the large complex distributed systems context. They will be listed in a moment. The second piece of work is an academic literature review. Just the organisational resilience and risk management areas are highly complex and diverse. This explains why there are many national and international Standards aimed at helping organisations tackle aspects of these and related areas more coherently. The chapter shows that there is a paucity of formal evidence to support their effectiveness. The goal of improved operability, or value creation, from the use of such Standards has to be predicated on accepting their wisdom on ethnographic data alone.
