ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a definition of research-creation and a delimitation of its scope as an overarching concept encompassing the many different associated practices, including art-based research, research-led practice, practice-based research, etc., but also other non-artistic practices such as technological innovations. The definition and scope of research-creation are based primarily on the idea of a close relationship between research and creation. Creation may involve any kind of artistic practice, or combination of practices, but also other related practices. A collaborative research-creation project is a voluntary process in which experts work together dynamically on the grounds of a shared understanding. While cooperation designates the mere grouping of individuals aiming at specific results, collaboration corresponds to a dynamic framework of activities within which a small group of individuals interact in the pursuit of a common goal. Felix Guattari's concept of "ecosophy," which accounts for the conceptual connection between environmental, social and mental ecologies, is particularly relevant for the research-creation project.
