ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the considerations for demonstrating research rigour within qualitative methods, and in doing so, looks at what means to achieve validity within qualitative analysis. It provides a consideration of the practices within the design and conduct of data collection of the case study that contribute to the validity and capacity for insight and congruency of research findings. The chapter considers the emic-etic tangle that is entered into by the researcher during immersive field-work and how the conduct of mixed-methods research can be considered an advantage to the balancing of perspective and biases introduced through this close and intimate connection with the community under study. Positioning and disclosure occurs between the researcher and the research population through the transparent establishment of who the researcher is understood to be by the community and the level of disclosure they provide about how their activities and interactions with community members will be recorded and presented as research findings.
