ABSTRACT

This chapter endeavours to outline some themes, issues, practices, problems and outcomes of library sectors, as well as bringing out the distinctive aspects of some individual case studies. It also draws upon some additional library refurbishment experiences in the United Kingdom (UK), USA and Hong Kong. This case study review follows the general sequence of a project from initiation to an evaluation of the refurbished library. The need for an improved physical environment in libraries derives from a number of common drawbacks to existing service points that show up in the case studies, such as neglect, building defects and worn-out building services. Building defects, and resultant costly repairs, stem from poor maintenance over a long period of time: in Dublin's case a building condition that required major intervention. And mechanical and electrical services may also be coming to the end of their designed life. Many refurbishment projects start with a review or report on the library building or buildings.
