ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the regulation of places of worship and other symbols of worship usually connected with such places. Worshipping in a building or another place is an important way in which religious individuals manifest their faith. Places of worship are clear symbols of religious communities and the protection of these places is included in the principle of the freedom of religion. 1 As all countries in the EU are party to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), they all adhere to the principle of the freedom of religion. Article 9 of the ECHR, in combination with article 14 (principle of equal treatment) and the twelfth protocol of the ECHR, provides a strong guarantee of this freedom.
