ABSTRACT

Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in religious legal systems and their relationship with the State, which are generally viewed as a single entity operating through primary and secondary legislation. This represents only part of the picture, and the following chapter explores the role of non-governmental bodies such as the Charity Commission and Ofcom, the ‘quasi-law’ provisions they employ and their impact on religious groups and individuals.
