ABSTRACT

In return for its defence aid to Israel, France reaped economic advantages. Israel quickly found that the new government was far less difdent than its predecessor had been in placing a price tag on its patronage, sometimes expressing this very directly. The Israelis, accustomed to expressions of French good will – including nancial largesse in the latter years of the Fourth Republic – at rst found this hard to digest. However, Israel was forced to accept the new rules the French dictated.
