ABSTRACT

Religio-political non-conformist organisations undertake a variety of activities in pursuit of democratisation and reconciliation. Criticisms of the Organ made it necessary to find out the views of the activists with regard to a truth and/or reconciliation commission. While the religio-political organisations conceive truth-telling as central to reconciliation, there does not seem to be much reflection on the negative aspects of truth-telling, such as reviving bad memories that may re-traumatise victims. The discourse of justice in modern-day political processes has been dominated by the liberal view which emphasises retributive justice rather than reconciliation. The three religio-political non-conformist organisations have carried out a variety of activities towards reconciliation and democratisation. They have linked secular and religious approaches, creating a resource that appeals to Zimbabwe's highly religious population. The Zimbabwe Christian Alliance (ZCA) attracts the attention of politicians and the leadership of mainline churches since it views the crisis in Zimbabwe as structural, advocating radical constitutional changes.
