Sociologists generally agree that there is an inverse relationship between socio-economic position and lottery play. 1 Low-income individuals spend a larger part of their incomes on lottery tickets than those with higher incomes. 2 However, the question remains open as to what factors explain this pattern. Why do the poor spend proportionally more of their income on lottery tickets than their wealthier and better educated peers?
