ABSTRACT

This chapter examines Louisa Ulrika's first years in Stockholm from her arrival in 1744 to the eve of Adolf Fredrik's accession to the throne in 1751, with special reference to the princess's political activities. It analyzes Louisa Ulrika's strategies to gather support and establish a political network. The chapter investigates the effects of the princess's strategies on Swedish politics. In order to understand the political milieu and the political structures within which Louisa Ulrika's politics developed, it is essential to first dissect the complexities of the Swedish political system in the Age of Liberty. In Louisa Ulrika's eyes, the political system in place in Sweden, since the death of Karl XII, represented a monstrous and unnatural abomination that needed to be corrected by all means. Her representation of the monarchy was strongly linked to glory acquired through warfare.
