ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the period of transition between 1751 and 1755. In 1751, the old king, Fredrik I, died. Louisa Ulrika, Adolf Fredrik, and their entourage had a carefully prepared plan of action. Adolf Fredrik would become king on different terms to Fredrik I; a constitutional revision would be proposed and enforced thanks to the support of Louisa Ulrika's network. Louisa Ulrika's relationship with the old King Fredrik I deteriorated shortly after her arrival in Stockholm. The princess found him invasive, uninteresting and tedious. She could not avoid socializing with him but she did not enjoy it very much. Louisa Ulrika's plan to revise the constitution upon Adolf Fredrik's ascent to the throne had failed. The new queen had in fact misjudged the commitment of her allies. The Hats and Tessin had let her down at the crucial moment.
