ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the management of inactive records from a records manager's point of view rather than an archivist's point of view. It also examines questions relating to digital preservation. The process of taking archives into an archival repository, whether by transfer from the creating body, or by donation or on loan as a collecting repository is known as acquisition. Outreach is a programme that advocates archives to the outside world, and raises the profile of the organisation internally and externally. The international standard commonly used for description is the General International Standard Archival Description (ISAD(G)), published by the International Council on Archives in 1994. Preservation is the term used to describe the measures necessary to ensure that records are stored, handled and managed so that their physical state, as well as the information they contain, is protected for as long as they are needed.
