ABSTRACT

Religious communities are led by human beings and in the powerful institutions as in all other powerful contexts there is a necessity to take stakeholders' needs for information on economy and leadership into account. This is a central challenge in the legal regime regarding the economy of faith communities the majority Church as well as minority religions in Denmark and thus a central message from this contribution, which deals with historical background for the current regime as well as challenges for the future relevant for a broader European context. This chapter explains how the state currently supports religious communities directly and indirectly. The chapter also explains the historical roots and background and informs about current challenges to this situation. It also presents a more detailed consideration is given to Transparency, accountability and good governance as general requirements to religious communities in a European context in the twenty-first century, be they privately or publicly legally organized and sponsored.
