ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the background behind two communication models namely, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and transactional analysis (TA). NLP is a model of communication based on observing successful patterns of communication between people. NLP explores ways of increasing people's awareness of the quality of their communication and improving their communication techniques. It is often viewed as a self help methodology. The title, NLP, was created to give the sense of a theoretical connection between neurological processes, language and behavioural patterns that have been learned through experience, hence the programming in the name. TA is an integrative approach to the theory of psychology and psychotherapy developed by Eric Berne in the 1950s. It is a theory of personality and systematic psychotherapy for personal growth and personal change. It emphasizes a pragmatic approach based on what works and as such it is continually evolving.
