ABSTRACT

The project in question may offer very practical benefits to the participants. For many reasons the end of the project is a difficult time for both the Supplier Organization (SO) and the Owner Organization (OO). SO seeks to exist beyond the current project and secure increased shareholder value into the future. With the best will in the world, it is unlikely that testing for the purposes of customer acceptance will reveal all imperfections within a product. Accordingly, it is commonplace for the contract between the SO and the OO to identify a period of time within which the rectification of any fault that emerges is to be resolved by the SO, at its cost. This is known as the 'Defects Liability Period' or 'Warranty Period'. A word of warning is appropriate since there is usually a clamour on behalf of SO to achieve the initial acceptance as soon as possible, even if this leads to accepting very long snagging lists.
