ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the clinical spaces within which care informed by the tenants of PHC is delivered, and particularly on the community-based health clinic. An unanticipated finding emerging from the interviews was that many of the women talked about the importance of the clinic environment in shaping their interactions with doctors. Rapport et al. (2007) distinguish between the doctor's work area and the patient examination area within the space. As outlined in the Alma-Ata Declaration of 1978, PHC is clearly care that is delivered in the community, for the community, and even by community members. Clinical depression is a chronic condition that leads to feelings of sadness and/or despair and changes in physiological functioning which can have significant implications for people's everyday functioning. Clinical depression is also a highly gendered disorder for a variety of reasons including that men and women have exposure to different kinds of social stressors and is more prevalent among women.
