ABSTRACT

At the moment our civilisation is facing a variety of challenges related to sustainable development. As also this book has shown, in these difficult times we are stretched to go far beyond our comfort zones. Problems in relation to inequality and use of resources can be solved only when we are open to new possibilities. It is therefore our duty to be aware of what lies ‘out there’ – different traditional and state-of-the-art research settings and theoretical-methodological traditions need to be examined every now and then. In this examination, even the sustainable development paradigm is not immune from critique. We must not forget that it is community values that are at stake when the times are strongly encouraging narrow minded individualistic thinking. Our ultimate goals must therefore be defined in terms of how we intend to manage keeping the urban environment habitable for future generations too.
