ABSTRACT

This chapter explores that the lighting considered largely from an aesthetic point of view as a major contributor to the attractiveness and appeal of the library building. Libraries may be obliged, however, to adopt the corporate marketing scheme of their local authority, rather than having their own distinctive identity and image. The commercial world responds to this in a way publicly funded organizations, like libraries, might find difficult, except when new building projects are in hand, when some or all of the following elements discussed and the next might be part of the planned library accommodation. Signs and guiding are part of the library's system of communication with its users and potential users: this includes its printed materials, and so on, as they help market the library and contribute towards its brand image. White metal shelves with light wood end panels seem almost de rigeur in recent years, even where other finishes and styles are available from library furniture suppliers.
