ABSTRACT

Current library functions will all be fulfilled by access to a networked computer which will provide the library in all its virtual facets. The demise of the public library, and with it the public provision of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), assumes that everybody has access to the technology, including the latest technology, and that the library's future purpose is purely a technological one. In portraying the need for change when planning library space, librarians too can be guilty of polarizing supposed alternatives the changes from collection to access and from preservation to communication. The building is designed to provide distinctive library areas for three age groups, as well as children with special needs, parents and carers. Much of the demand for change relates to the quality of library buildings and sustaining that quality but, equally important for designing accommodation, is resolving the question as to the purpose and roles of the public library and its targeted audiences.
