ABSTRACT

These biennial awards have been jointly sponsored by the American Library Association’s Library Administration and Management Association and the American Institute of Architects since 1963. They ‘recognise distinguished accomplishment in library architecture by an American architect for any library and without regard to location or type’. Public library buildings attracting awards since 1991 are listed below – in 1991 they were all public libraries – and, in the spirit of the awards program, 1991 also included a library building in Berlin by American architects. Libraries are new buildings, unless otherwise stated and library size is generally indicated. An illustrated article featuring the award-winning libraries for that award year is usually found in the April issue of American libraries and in the summer or fall issue of Library administration and management. The latter has usually fuller descriptions, statistics and plans. The libraries are also briefly described at: www.ala.org/ala/lamaawards/aiaalalibrarybuildings.hmt.
