ABSTRACT

The fundamental planning questions are therefore what kind of service point is under consideration and where it fits in a library system's building provision strategy. The nature of a service point, its size and component parts can result in library buildings of different plan or shape rectangular or circular, for example. It concludes by considering some of the likely advantages and disadvantages of varied library plans or shapes. Public library service points described the variety of library buildings serving various sizes of urban and rural population in the UK and the position remains much the same today in both urban and rural areas they usually offer a full range of services on a scale appropriate to local circumstances and the number of potential users. The study found that there was little overlap in the catchment areas of the two Runcorn libraries and the three Warrington branches but Warrington Central Library drew users from the entire area.
