ABSTRACT

In taking a building project forward, the librarian's role is essentially that of a planner, while that of the architect is as a designer, providing a design solution to the problems posed by the librarian's requirements, as set out in the brief for the library. At its most basic, creating a new library building is about planning, design and construction. The conversion of a building to a library may entail physical and structural constraints as to what can be created at the design and construction stages. An implementation plan agreed with the system vendor will involve: This chapter has provided a planning and design framework to help the librarian understand and confidently take part in the stages involved in creating a public library building. The architect is then able to design a building to respond to that purpose and user needs, and a builder is employed capable of construction work of a high standard.
