ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered by the preceding chapters of this book. The book highlights the lack of strategic overview of public transport accessibility at the city or metropolitan level. This left a challenge for planners concerned with planning for better integration of land use development and public transport as cities embraced the goal of sustainable mobility. The Spatial Network Analysis for Multimodal Urban Transport Systems (SNAMUTS) tool can be used to facilitate dialogue among stakeholders about future scenarios for city development and investment. It sets out to develop a benchmark for public transport accessibility for Australian cities by learning from elsewhere. With this in mind we selected a range of cities from different perspectives: those known as exemplars for public transport accessibility; New World cities that developed during a similar period to Australian cities; cities with different mixes of public transport modes bus-dominant/rail dominant; cities with different governance frameworks and so on.
