ABSTRACT

Challenge should be welcomed as an indication that the learner is engaged, thinking and re-shaping existing patterns. Effective learning thrives on challenge, whether the challenge comes in the form of testing a hypothesis, pushing for deeper understanding or evaluating existing beliefs or behaviours and finding them wanting. A key skill for a good trainer or facilitator is being able to challenge these boundaries and push them. An important part of pattern making is to challenge learners to let go of things that they cannot influence and to tackle those, however small, over which they have control. Another example of the need for a facilitator to challenge and confront comes in relation to the stated learning objectives or desired outcomes from a learning programme. Good facilitators will always encourage learners to challenge the norm and seek creative options in any given situation. Challenge and confrontation is a valuable part of creating a rich, active learning environment.
